How many Generations of Computer?
Computer Generation
There are five Generations of Computer
- First Generation_______1946-1959
- Second Generation_____1959-1965
- Third Generation______1965-1971
- Fourth Generation_____1971-Today
- Fifth Generation______Today to future
- J.P.Eckert and J.W.Mauchy invent the first successful electronic computer called ENIAC,ENIAC stands for Electronic Numeric Integrated and Calculator.
- The first computers used Vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory.
- They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, generated a lot of heat.
- First generation computer relied on machine language, the lowest programming language understood by computers to perform calculations, and they could only solve one problem at a time.
Second Generation________Transistor
- John Bardeen(1908-1991),William B. Shockley(1910-1989) and Walter H invented the second generation of computer technology.
- In this generation, transistors were used that cheaper, consumed less power, more impact in size, more reliable and faster than the first generation.
- One transistor replaced the equivalent of 40 vacuum tubes.
- Still generated a great deal of heat that can damage the computer.
Third Generation________Integrated Circuit
- Robert Noyce of Fairchild semiconductor and Jack Kilby(American Electrical Engineer) invented the Third Generation of Computer.
- The Third Generation of Computer are much faster, efficient, reliable, less maintenance and small size as compared to first and second generation of computers.
- The development of the Integrated Circuit was the sign of third generation of computers.
Fourth Generation________Microprocessor
- The first microprocessor was first introduced in 1971 by Intel, invented by their employee Tedd Hoff.
- The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of computers,as thousand of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon chip.
- As these small computers became more powerful, they could be linked together to form networks, which eventually led to the development of the internet.
- Fourth generation of computers also saw the development of GUIs,the mouse and handheld devices.
Fifth generation_______Artificial Intelligence
- Based on Artificial Intelligence(AI).
- The fifth generation of computer system was begun by Japan's Ministry of international Trade and Industry.
- Still in Development.
- The goal is to develop devices that response to natural language input and are capable of learning and self organization.
- There are some applications, such as voice recognization, that are being used today.
