Computer Network

Acomputer network is a group of computer system and other computing hardware devices linked together through communication channel.

Network of Networks

Networks are connected together to make a larger network which is called network of networks.

Example

"The internet is a well known example of network of networks".

Need of a Computer Network

Acomputer network is established for the purpose of sharing resources.

Examples of sharing resources

File Sharing

Networking of computer helps a network user to share files.
It can be as accessing work files from your home computer or sharing your created documents on your web page.

Examples

If you need datesheet of your board examination,you can get the file from Internet without visiting BISE(Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education) office.
Morever we can sharing files with others who are living in other country and other city in the same way.

Hardware Sharing

Hardware sharing means that a hardware is connected with network and all the users of that network can use that hardware.
User can share devices such as printer,scanner,CD ROM drivers,Hard disk drivers,etc.
Using a network these resources are shared to get a cost efficient solution.

Example

In a library we have only one printer but all can use that.

Application Sharing

Applications can be shared over the network.
It means that more than one users may use the same application or even share your desktop essentially.
It allows user to access information remotely.

Sharing a single Internet connection

Using a network at home or office,we can share one internet connection with more than one users.
Internet connection sharing is a method for connecting multiple computers in a LAN to the internet through a single connection and single IP address.

User Communication

Network allow user to communicate using e-mail,newsgroups,SMS messages,voice recordings and video conferrencing etc.
So, communication with many people sitting on different locations is possible due to network.

Storage capacity means the limit to store data in a computer.
If we connect our computer to another computer having more storage,then we can also use the disk space of the computer.In this way we can store and access files stored reomtely.
In this setup a computer providing the storage is called File server and the computer accesing the space is called Workstation.
